ki·ne·sin ki-'nē-sən n an ATPase similar to dynein that functions as a motor protein in the intracellular transport esp. of cell organelles and molecules (as mitochondria and proteins) along microtubules

ki·ne·sin (ki-neґsin) any of a family of large cytoplasmic proteins with ATPase activity that bind to vesicles and particles and transport them along microtubules, usually toward the plus end, using energy from ATP hydrolysis. Kinesins are divided into two functional classes: cytosolic kinesins are responsible for the transport of vesicles and organelles; spindle kinesins are involved in spindle formation and chromosome segregation during cell division. Cf. dynein. In EC nomenclature, called plus-end-directed kinesin ATPase and minus-end-directed kinesin ATPase.
