[USP] the monohydrated monohydrochloride salt of lidocaine; used to produce local anesthesia by infiltration injection and by topical application to the skin or mucosa, and to produce caudal, epidural, or retrobulbar anesthesia and peripheral or sympathetic nerve block; also administered intravenously for use as a cardiac antiarrhythmic.
