me·per·i·dine hy·dro·chlo·ride (mə-perґĭ-dēn) [USP] a synthetic opioid analgesic, used as an analgesic to relieve moderate to severe pain, including during childbirth, and as an adjunct to anesthesia; administered orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, or intravenously. Abuse of this drug may lead to dependence. Called also pethidine hydrochloride.
