a proton-pump inhibitor used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Omeprazole can be effective in cases that have failed to respond to H2-receptor antagonists, such as ranitidine. Administered by mouth, it is long-acting and need only be taken once a day. Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, headache, constipation, and skin rashes. Trade name: Losec.

omep·ra·zole (o-mepґra-zōl) [USP] a proton pump inhibitor used in the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and gastric hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and peptic ulcer, and in conjunction with antibiotics in the treatment of peptic ulcer associated with Helicobacter pylori infection; administered orally.
