In a plane cartesian coordinate system, the vertical axis (y). Cf.:abscissa.

or·di·nate (orґdĭ-nət) [L. ordinare to arrange in order] in a two-dimensional coordinate system, the distance of a point from the horizontal (x) axis, measured along a line parallel to the y-axis. Denoted by y. Cf. abscissa.
