pro·throm·bin·ase (pro-thromґbin-āse) 1. the complex formed between activated coagulation factor X and calcium, phospholipid, and modified factor V; it can cleave and activate prothrombin to thrombin. 2. sometimes specifically the active enzyme center of the complex, activated factor X (Xa).
