Consists chiefly of cellulose tetranitrate, obtained by the action of nitric and sulfuric acid s on cotton; used in the preparation of collodion. SYN: colloxylin, dinitrocellulose, nitrocellulose, soluble gun cotton, xyloidin. [pyro- + G. xylon, wood]
