The dried leaves of S. officinalis (family Labiatae), garden or meadow sage; it inhibits secretory activity, especially of the sweat glands, and was also used in bronchitis and inflammation of the throat. SYN: sage. [L.]

Sal·via (salґve-ə) [L.] a genus of plants of the family Labiatae. S. officinaґlis L. is the medicinal herb sage (q.v.). S. reflexґa L. is mintweed, an Australian plant rich in nitrates, which can cause fatal nitrite poisoning in ruminants.
