Liver degeneration and necrosis caused by ingestion of plants of the genus Senecio, such as ragwort and groundsel; similar hepatotoxic properties have been observed after ingestion of some kinds of Crotalaria and Heliotropium.

se·ne·ci·o·sis si-.nē-sē-'ō-səs n, pl -o·ses -.sēz a frequently fatal intoxication esp. of livestock feeding on plants of the genus Senecio that is marked by intense acute or chronic necrosis and cirrhosis of the liver

se·ne·ci·o·sis (sə-ne″she-oґsis) poisoning of ruminants from eating species of Senecio that contain hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids such as jacobine, retrorsine, senecine, and senecifoline; characteristics include cirrhosis, photosensitization, jaundice, and central nervous system effects such as confusion and clumsiness. Called also Senecio poisoning and ragwort poisoning.
