(smut) 1. any fungus of the order Ustilaginales. 2. contamination of cereal grass (wheat, oats, rye, corn) by one of these fungi, particularly of the genera Tilletia, Ustilago, and Urocystis. Ingestion of contaminated seeds can cause poisoning; see ergotism and ustilaginism.
