(THF) tet·ra·hy·dro·fo·lic ac·id (THF) (tet″rə-hi″dro-foґlik) a form of folic acid in which the pteridine ring is fully reduced; it is the parent compound of a variety of coenzymes that serve as carriers of one-carbon groups in metabolic reactions. Tetrahydrofolic acid and its derivatives are required for the metabolism of several amino acids, the formation of creatine and choline, the methylation of RNA molecules, the synthesis of purines, and the synthesis of deoxythymidine monophosphate. Called also tetrahydropteroylglutamic acid.
