the dissolution of a blood clot (thrombus) by the infusion of a fibrinolytic agent into the blood. It may be used in the treatment of phlebothrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and coronary thrombosis. See also tissue-type plasminogen activator.

throm·bol·y·sis (throm-bolґĭ-sis) [thrombo- + -lysis] lysis of a thrombus or thrombi; it involves a complex series of events, of which the most important involves local action of plasmin within the substance of the thrombus.
