trans·fec·tion (trans-fekґshən) originally, the artificial infection of competent bacterial cells by uptake of nucleic acid isolated from virus or bacteriophage, resulting in the production of mature virus or phage particles. The term has broadened and now includes any means of artificial introduction of foreign DNA into cultured eukaryotic cells; sometimes specifically denoting the stable integration of the foreign DNA into the recipient genome (also called stable transfection).
