A thymidine analog that is an inhibitor of in vitro replication of HIV virus, the causative agent of AIDS and ARC, and is used in the management of these diseases. SYN: azidothymidine.

an antiviral drug used in the treatment of AIDS and HIV infection. The drug slows the growth of HIV infection in the body, but is not curative. It is administered by mouth and intravenously; the most common side-effects are nausea, headache, and insomnia, and it may damage the blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow. Trade name: Retrovir.

zi·do·vu·dine (zi-doґvu-dēn) [USP] a synthetic nucleoside analogue, of thymidine, that inhibits replication of some retroviruses, including the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); used in the management of HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), administered orally or intravenously.
