Probiotic
A microbe that protects its host and can prevent disease. The most common probiotic today is Lactobacillus acidopholous, found in yogurt, acidopholous milk, and supplements. Probiotics counter an unfortunate effect of treatment with antibiotics — the decimation of helpful intestinal bacteria. Probiotics given in combination with antibiotics are useful in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The yeast S. boulardii and three strains of Lactobacillus have been shown to be useful in this situation.
