protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) a class of disorders caused by varying degrees of protein and calorie deficiency, alone or in combination, frequently aggravated by accompanying physiologic and environmental stresses. It may be primary, including such disorders as marasmus, kwashiorkor, and marasmic kwashiorkor, or secondary to other diseases.
