claw toe n HAMMERTOE

* * *

a toe deformity in which the metatarsophalangeal joint is held in extension while the proximal interphalangeal joint is fixed in flexion and the distal joint is held in the neutral or slightly flexed position. When a cause is known, it is often an underlying neurologic disorder, such as tethered cord syndrome or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease; sometimes it may be a complication of rheumatoid arthritis. The metatarsal heads bear weight and become painful during walking so that the patient has a shuffling gait. Called also cock-up deformity.

Unilateral claw toes in a child with a tethered spinal cord.
