American physicians. In 1923 the Dicks isolated the hemolytic streptococcus that causes scarlet fever. They also developed the toxin used for immunization and a method for preventing the disease-a toxin-antitoxin injection. The Dick test was developed in 1924.

a test for susceptibility to scarlet fever. If a small quantity of toxin from the bacteria responsible (haemolytic streptococci) is injected under the skin of a person not immune to the disease, a positive reaction results, causing local reddening of the skin.
