exfoliative cytology n the study of cells shed from body surfaces esp. for determining the presence or absence of a cancerous condition

the examination by a variety of techniques, such as microscopy and flow cytometry, of cells desquamated from a body surface or lesion, done for detection of malignancy, measurement of hormonal levels, and other purposes. The cells may be obtained by such procedures as aspiration, washing, smear, or scraping, and the technique may also be used for secretions such as sputum, urine, abdominal fluid, prostatic secretion, or vaginal secretions.
