feline infectious anemia n a widespread contagious disease of cats characterized by weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite, and hemolytic anemia and caused by a bacterial parasite of red blood cells belonging to the genus Haemobartonella (H. felis)

a cyclic type of hemolytic anemia in domestic cats caused by infection of red blood cells with the rickettsia Haemobartonella felis, which may be spread from cat to cat during fights; acute cases are characterized by fever, jaundice, anorexia, and splenomegaly and can be fatal. Called also haemobartonellosis.
