Hartmann Alexis Frank (1898-1964)
American pediatrician. Hartmann spent virtually all of his professional career as professor of pediatrics at Washington University's School of Medicine and as physician-in-chief at St. Louis Children's Hospital. His principal contributions were in the fields of pediatric biochemistry and carbohydrate metabolism. He published papers on neonatal hypoglycemia, hyperinsulinism, juvenile diabetes, galactosemia, and other topics. He is credited with pioneering studies on the use of sodium lactate for the treatment of metabolic acidosis. In 1932 he published two reports describing the use of lactated Ringer's solution for the treatment of acidosis in children.
