hemolytic uremic syndrome n any of a group of rare disorders that are characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and varying degrees of kidney failure, that are precipitated by a variety of etiologic factors (as infection with toxin-producing bacteria of the genera Escherichia or Shigella), and that include forms affecting primarily young children or adult females abbr. a form of thrombotic microangiopathy usually seen in children, characterized by renal failure, hemolytic anemia, and severe thrombocytopenia and purpura. Some authorities consider it identical to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Called also Gasser s.
