Hex·am·i·ta (hek-samґĭ-tə) [hexa- + Gr. mitos thread] a genus of flagellate protozoa of the order Diplomonadida, phylum Parabasalia, having two anterior nuclei, six anterior flagella, and two posterior flagella. It comprises free-living species as well as intestinal parasites. H. meleaґgridis causes enteritis in wild and domestic fowl; H. muґris is found in rats, mice, hamsters, and various wild rodents; H. salmoґnis is found in trout and salmon; and H. columґbae is found in pigeons.
