Kar·win·skia kär-'winz-kē-ə n a genus of shrubs or small trees (family Rhamnaceae) that are chiefly native to Mexico and the southwestern U.S., have flowers with small hooded short-clawed petals and fleshy drupes, and include one (K. humboldtiana) with a fruit that has been known to poison birds (as domestic chickens)

German traveler. The genus Karwinskia was named in Karwinsky's honor in 1832.

Kar·win·skia (kahr-winґske-ə) a genus of shrubs of the family Rhamnaceae, found mostly in the southwestern United States and Mexico. K. humboldtiaґna is the buckthorn or coyotillo, a shrub whose fruit causes buckthorn poisoning.
