Austrian radiologist. Kienböck pioneered in radiology. From 1910-11 he published descriptions of dislocation of the hand and a slowly progressive chronic osteitis involving the lunate bone. The latter is now known as Kienböck's disease.

necrosis of the lunate bone of the wrist caused by interruption of its blood supply (see osteochondritis). It usually follows chronic stress to the bone or injury (often trivial) and presents with pain and stiffness of the wrist. Treatment is rest, but some cases require surgical shortening of the radius or fusion of the wrist.
