* * *

1. a sudden, rapid rise in body temperature in patients undergoing general anesthesia, associated with signs of increased muscle metabolism, such as tachycardia, tachypnea, sweating, cyanosis, increased carbon dioxide production, and usually muscle rigidity. Susceptibility to this disorder is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and can be caused by mutation in any of several genes. Called also h. of anesthesia and malignant hyperpyrexia. 2. a similar condition in pigs, a type of porcine stress syndrome in reaction to drugs such as halothane or succinylcholine chloride.
