mass spectrometer

mass spectrometer
mass spectrometer n a mass spectroscope that detects ions by means of electronic amplification

* * *

an analytical instrument which identifies a substance by sorting a stream of electrified particles (ions) according to their mass; the sorting is most commonly done as follows: when the stream of charged particles enters a magnetic field, the particles are deflected into semicircular paths varying with their mass and charge components, ultimately striking a photographic plate or photomultiplier tube sensor. Called also mass spectrograph.
