myo·fil·a·ment -'fil-ə-mənt n one of the individual filaments of actin or myosin that make up a myofibril

myo·fila·ment (mi″o-filґə-mənt) [myo- + filament] any of the numerous ultramicroscopic threadlike structures occurring in bundles in the myofibrils of striated muscle fibers. The thick myosin filaments and the thin actin filaments are together responsible for the contractile properties of muscle. Also present are intermediate filaments, of uncertain function, composed of desmin and vimentin. See Plate 32.
