a cell type of carcinoma of the bronchus. Oat cells are small round or oval cells with darkly staining nuclei and scanty indistinct cytoplasm. Oat-cell carcinoma is usually related to smoking and accounts for about one-quarter of bronchial carcinomas; it carries a poor prognosis. It is now increasingly known as small-cell lung cancer and can be cured in the early stages by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
