optical isomerism

optical isomerism
optical isomerism n stereoisomerism in which the isomers have different effects on polarized light and in which asymmetry of the molecule as a whole or the presence of one or more asymmetrical atoms is responsible for such effects

* * *

an old division of stereoisomerism that contains isomers that differ in the arrangement of substituents at one or more asymmetric carbon atoms; thus some but not necessarily all are optically active, e.g., d-, l-, and meso-tartaric acid. Some optical isomers are enantiomers (the d and l forms); some are diastereomers (the d and meso forms).
