pa·pa·in (pə-paґin) (pə-piґin) [EC 3.4.22.2] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolysis of proteins and peptides with preferential cleavage at bonds containing arginine, lysine, and glycine residues. It is obtained from the latex of the papaya tree, 1. Carica papaya. [USP] a purified preparation of papain used as a protein digestant and as a topical application for enzymatic dйbridement and promotion of normal healing of surface lesions.
