phenyl salicylate n a crystalline ester C13H10O3 used chiefly as a stabilizer for cellulosic plastics and vinyl plastics and as an ingredient of suntan preparations because of its ability to absorb ultraviolet light and also as an analgesic and antipyretic called also salol

a compound formerly used as an analgesic, antipyretic, intestinal antiseptic, and enteric coating for tablets, and in the prevention of sunburn. In veterinary medicine, it is sometimes used internally as an antipyretic and externally as an antiseptic. Called also salol.
