poke·weed (pōkґwēd) Phytolacca americana, a tall perennial herb of North America; its root has emetic and cathartic properties and has been used in treatment of rheumatic conditions. See also pokeweed mitogen, under mitogen. Cattle and pigs that eat excessive amounts of it sometimes suffer fatal gastroenteritis and diarrhea because of its content of oxalates and saponins. Called also pokeroot.
