a local anaesthetic used particularly in ear, nose, and throat surgery and in dentistry. It is applied in a solution to mucous membranes or injected; high doses of the drug may cause methaemoglobinaemia and cyanosis. Prilocaine is also a constituent of EMLA cream. Trade name: Citanest.
