primary syphilis n the first stage of syphilis that is marked by the development of a chancre and the spread of the causative spirochete in the tissues of the body

the first stage of syphilis, in which a painless primary lesion called a chancre appears at the site of inoculation and is associated with regional adenopathy and bubo formation. Chancres usually appear two to four weeks after infection and heal spontaneously within two weeks. Untreated patients soon develop secondary syphilis.
