Schönlein Johann Lucas (1793-1864)

German physician. Schönlein was one of the leading clinicians of his time. The early part of his career was spent at the university in Würzburg, Germany, where he lectured in pathological anatomy and eventually became director of the medical clinic there. His later appointments were as professor of medicine at Zurich, Switzerland, and Berlin, Germany. In 1837 he described a form of purpura often associated with pains in the joints.

Henoch Eduard Heinrich (1820-1910)

German pediatrician. Henoch was one of Johann Schönlein's outstanding students at the University of Berlin. He described purpura associated with joint disease in two papers delivered before the Berlin Medical Society. His reports were published in 1868 and 1874. Henoch's descriptions expanded upon the observations made earlier by Schönlein.
