a salt of sodium that neutralizes acid and is used to treat stomach and digestive disorders, acidosis, and sodium deficiency. It is administered by mouth or injection; high doses may cause digestive upsets. See also antacid.

[USP] the monosodium salt of carbonic acid, NaHCO3, used as an electrolyte replenisher and systemic alkalizer, administered by intravenous injection or infusion. It is also administered orally as a gastric antacid and urinary alkalizer, and is applied topically in solution to wash the nose, mouth, or vagina, and as a cleansing enema; sometimes used in solution as a dressing for minor burns. Called also baking soda and bicarbonate of soda.
