thi·a·zide (thiґə-zīd) any of a group of benzothiadiazene sulfonamide derivatives, typified by chlorothiazide, that act as diuretics by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium in the proximal renal tubule and stimulating chloride excretion, with resultant increase in excretion of water. They also increase the excretion of potassium, which can cause hypokalemia requiring potassium supplementation, and some increase in bicarbonate excretion. Thiazides are used for the treatment of edema due to congestive heart failure or chronic hepatic or renal disease and, alone or in combination with other drugs, in the treatment of hypertension. Called also benzothiadiazide, benzothiadiazine, and thiadiazine.
