tinea ver·si·col·or -'vər-si-.kəl-ər n a chronic noninflammatory infection of the skin esp. of the trunk that is caused by a lipophilic fungus (Pityrosporum orbiculare syn. Melassezia furfur) and is marked by the formation of irregular macular patches that often appear lighter than the surrounding area if the skin is tanned and may appear darker than the surrounding skin if the skin is not tanned or black called also pityriasis versicolor

a common, chronic, usually symptomless disorder, characterized by macular patches of various sizes and shapes, with colors from white in pigmented skin to tan or brown in pale skin. It is caused by Malassezia furfur and is usually seen in hot, humid tropical regions. Called also dermatomycosis furfuracea, liver spots, pityriasis versicolor, and t. flava.
