tri·io·do·thy·ro·nine (T3) (tri-i″o-do-thiґro-nēn) 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine, an iodine-containing thyroid hormone secreted in smaller amounts than thyroxine; most circulating triiodothyronine is produced by the deiodination of thyroxine in the peripheral tissues, chiefly the liver. It has several times the biological activity of thyroxine and is the “tissue-active” form of thyroid hormone.
