the more benign, less infectious, usually self-limited of the two polar types of leprosy; as a result of well-developed cell-mediated immunity to Mycobacterium leprae, acid-fast bacilli usually cannot be identified in the lesions. The lepromin test is positive. It is characterized by asymmetric, sharply defined, anesthetic, discolored, dry macules or plaques with elevated borders; early severe nerve damage; and often muscle atrophy. Called also paucibacillary l.
