vasoactive intestinal polypeptide
vasoactive intestinal polypeptide n a protein hormone that consists of a chain of 28 amino acid residues, was first isolated from the gut of the pig, has been implicated as a neurotransmitter, and has a wide range of physiological activities (as stimulation of secretion by the pancreas and small intestine, vasodilation, and inhibition of gastric juice production) abbr. VIP called also vasoactive intestinal peptide

(VIP) a peptide hormone (3326 daltons, 28 amino acids) widely distributed throughout the body but found in highest concentrations in the nervous system and intestines; it is released locally from nerve endings or endocrine cells. Its primary actions are thought to be to serve as a neurotransmitter, to relax smooth muscles of the circulation, intestines, and genitourinary system, to increase secretion of water and electrolytes from the pancreas and intestines, and to release hormones from the pancreatic islets, intestines, and hypothalamus. It is found in excess with VIPomas and the Verner-Morrison syndrome. Called also vasoactive intestinal peptide.
