A mucolytic agent that reduces the viscosity of mucous secretions; used to prevent liver injury produced by acetaminophen toxicity.

a drug administered as eye drops to break down mucus filaments in the eyes in the treatment of dry eyes (for example, in Sjögren's syndrome). It is also given, by intravenous infusion, to prevent liver damage in paracetamol overdosage. Trade name: Ilube.

ac·e·tyl·cys·te·ine (as″ə-təl-) (as″ə-tēl-sisґte-ēn) [USP] the N-acetyl derivative of L-cysteine used as a mucolytic agent for adjunct therapy in bronchopulmonary disorders to reduce the viscosity of mucus and facilitate its removal, administered by instillation or nebulization; and as an antidote for acetaminophen poisoning, administered orally or intravenously.
