xan·thine ox·i·dase (zanґthēn okґsĭ-dās) [EC 1.17.3.2] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of xanthine to urate, with oxygen as an acceptor, and generating peroxide; it also oxidizes hypoxanthine, some other purines and pterins, and aldehydes. Under some conditions the product is mainly superoxide rather than peroxide. It is a molybdoflavoprotein with a bound FAD and two iron-sulfur centers. Under certain conditions, the enzyme from animal tissues interconverts with xanthine dehydrogenase (q.v.).
