a drug, similar to didanosine, that is used to prolong the lives of patients with AIDS and HIV infection. It is administered by mouth. Possible side-effects include reversible nerve damage, ulceration of the gullet, skin rashes, severe pancreatitis, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Trade name: Hivid.

zal·ci·ta·bine (zal-siґtə-bēn) [USP] 2′3′-dideoxycytidine, a nucleoside analogue of 2′-deoxycytidine; an antiretroviral agent that is converted intracellularly into the active metabolite dideoxycytidine 5′-triphosphate, which inhibits the action of reverse transcriptase and so inhibits viral replication; used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, administered orally. Formerly called dideoxycytidine (ddC).
