An acquired slowly progressive painful fibrous constriction that develops in the digitoplantar fold, usually of the little toe, gradually resulting in spontaneous amputation of the toe; most commonly affects black males in the tropics. [fr. Af. (Lagos), to saw]

loss of one or more toes due to slow growth of a fibrous band around the toe that eventually causes a spontaneous amputation. The condition is found in Black Africans and is associated with going barefoot.

ain·hum (iґnum) (ānґhum) (Port. īnґyoom) [Port., from Yoruba eyun to saw] a disease affecting the toes, especially the fifth toe, and sometimes the fingers, seen chiefly in black adult males in Africa, in which a linear constriction around the affected digit leads to spontaneous amputation of the distal part of the digit. Called also dactylolysis spontanea.
