appendicitis of acute onset requiring surgical intervention; symptoms usually include pain in the right lower abdominal quadrant with local and referred rebound tenderness, overlying muscle spasm, and cutaneous hyperesthesia; fever with presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes results from the localized infection. Periumbilical colicky pain may be present, due to blockage of the appendix by a fecalith; other symptoms and signs may vary according to the location of the appendix or presence of adhesive bands or kinking.
