unitunicate ascus

unitunicate ascus
a cylindrical ascus whose wall has a single layer. There are two types: the operculate type has a small cap at the end of the ascus, which pops open when the mature organism is ready to eject its spores; and the inoperculate type has no cap and ejects its spores through a pore or slit that momentarily opens. See also Unitunicatae.
