A nonsteroidal compound exerting an effect similar to that of an aldosterone inhibitor, i.e., urinary sodium excretion is enhanced and potassium excretion is reduced; a potassium sparing diuretic.

amil·o·ride hy·dro·chlo·ride (ə-milґə-rīd) [USP] a potassium-sparing diuretic that inhibits the reabsorption of sodium in the distal and proximal convoluted tubules and the collecting tubule; used in conjunction with a loop or thiazide diuretic for the treatment of edema and hypertension and for the prophylaxis and treatment of hypokalemia; administered orally.
