facial cellulitis

facial cellulitis
cellulitis affecting the face, sometimes produced by spread of infection from nearby or distant foci. In children it is usually on just one cheek, and in adults it most often affects the neck; it may also occur around the eyes. It is tender, bluish in color, and poorly demarcated, with an edematous border, and patients often have fever, local pain, and bacteremia. Haemophilus influenzae type b, Group B streptococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae are etiologic agents in young children. In adults and older children, Staphylococcus aureus and group A streptococci are the usual etiologic agents.
